Boilies are fantastic bait for fish like barbel.

More seasoned anglers already use boilies, but if you are new to barbel angling, then you might not have heard of boilies before.

Boilies are my most successful bait for barbel angling, and they seem to love a large variety of different colours and flavours.

These baits are more than just capable. Boilies are incredibly easy to store, carry around and are versatile in presentations and uses.

I keep mine in a tub, and they last for about a year.

So there is no need to keep them in the fridge use them up on a fishing trip.

A boilie is a dough bait which is boiled or cooked. Ingredients include flour and egg plus whatever you want to add to attract the barbel.

With a limitless selection available, it’s hard to pick the best option. I have tested 15+ and have picked my three favourites.

Top 3 Picks

Best Performing Barbel Boilie

If you are looking for a smelly boilie which attracts barbel then look no further. The Vampire Garlic boilies by Radical got the attention of my other half from across the house as soon as I opened the packet. Luckily stored in my boilie tub, the smell is sealed. I’m sure this is the reason they are so successful.

Another effective Barbel Boilie

The Rastafari Boilie by Radical Fishing drives barbel wild and is the boilie I would choose if I could only take one! Hemp is a long time favourite bait of mine for fish like barbel so it makes complete sense that this flavour performs so well.

Best Value Barbel Boilie

By far the best value for money when it comes to boilies. The Starmerbaits boilie cutoffs arent the most effective on their own but paired with a well-scented boilie, these provide so much mass for such a small price.  I would recommend everyone who uses boilies to get these!

1. Quantum Radical Boilie Vampire Garlic

Reasons To buy

  • Very Effective
  • Strong Smell
  • Long Shelf Life

Reasons To Avoid

  • A little expensive if you want to groundbait

Vampire Garlic Review

These boilies made by Radical are the best-scented boilies I have ever used. Once opened you can smell them from a mile away. So make sure you have a boilie tub or can reseal the bag properly.

The Vampire Garlic boilies are so effective because of this scent and how it leaches int the water.

Another thing that is great is the long shelf life, lasting over a year.

I would say though, that these are fairly expensive if you want to grind them down and make a ground bait then you should look into the next option!

2. Starmerbaits Boilies

Reasons To buy

  • Very Affordable
  • Great For Bulking Out Bait

Reasons To Avoid

  • If you don’t have a lot of storage
  • If you are looking for the most effective boilie

Starmerbaits Boilies Review

The Starmerbaits cutoffs are by far the best value I have seen in boilies. Even though these are cutoffs and not necessarily the best quality they are great for filling out ground baits.

when used with the great-scented boilies they become super effective and really help you bait up the water as much as possible to attract as many Barbel as possible.

Again, while these are not the most effective, they are an incredible value and for a fraction of the price, you get 5kg.

This is a mixed bag containing all different colours, scents and sizes.

I do think everyone should get a bag of these for use with the expensive boilies but if you can only get one bag or you have difficulty storing large amounts, then don’t go for this one.

3. Sticky Baits The Krill

Reasons To buy

  • Very Effective
  • Strong Smell
  • Long Shelf Life

Reasons To Avoid

  • A little expensive if you want to groundbait

Sticky Baits The Krill Review

Another great all-round option is the Krill flavour boilies by Sticky baits which can be used when fishing for a range of bottom feeders.

These are also available in a range of sizes so you can target slightly smaller species or use them on a smaller hair rig and hook.

While these are great, for some reason I prefer the other boilies on this list. But that is more my personal preference and I have caught fish on all five packets of boilies.

4. Quantum Radical Bloody Chicken Boilies

Reasons To buy

  • Very Effective
  • Strong Smell
  • Long Shelf Life

Reasons To Avoid

  • A little expensive if you want to groundbait

Quantum Radical Bloody Chicken Boilies Review

Chicken and other meats are great baits, I know a lot of anglers who use the chicken liver to fish for carp tench and barbel.

These are probably the best leaking boilies on the list and not only does the scent travel in the water so does the colour.

This is best used on a light coloured floor bed so they contrast as much as possible.

Radical Fishing Rastafari Boilie Review

The Rastafari Boilie by Radical Fishing drives barbel wild and is the boilie I would choose if I could only take one!

Hemp is a long time favourite bait of mine (and a lot of carp anglers) for fish like barbel so it makes complete sense that this flavour performs so well.

If you are used to using hemp as bait and know the fish in your local waters like it.

Then the Rastafari Boilie would be your go-to boilies for Barbel.

What makes a great barbel boilie?

Shelf Life

The main benefit of boilies is that they last for a year or more on your shelf or even stored in your tackle bag.

This is personally the main reason I use them. I have made my own which are just as effective but they go rotten too quickly or take up space in the fridge or freezer.

What colour of boilie is best?

When it comes to boilie colour, I tend to go with choosing a colour which contracts the bottom of the water.

If I’m fishing somewhere with a pale floor bed I will pick a brighter boilie and if I’m fishing somewhere with a dark floor bed I will go for a white or yellow boilie.

Flavour

There is no right answer to the best flavour or scent of boilie. Generally, it depends on what the fish in your waters prefer.

After all if I was trying to catch you, the best bait is the food you like the most!

Conclusion

This is the list of my 5 most effective boilies for barbel fishing.

Generally, you will need to try a few before you find one you like the most.

If you have an issue with bait going rotten in your fridge because you can’t get out to the water then you will really benefit from this long shelf-life bait.

Personally I think normal baits are just as effective but when it comes to the convenience it’s not even close.

Seriously, no other bait come even close. Maybe artificial baits like rubber sweetcorn are as easy to store but those baits don’t tend to be effective.
